1)抽象名詞和物質名詞表示一般概念時，前面通常不用冠詞，但特指時，則須用定冠詞。試比較：

Our battalion fought north and south during the Anti - Japanese War.
我們這個營在抗日戰爭時期轉戰南北。
He is fond of music.他喜歡音樂。

2)抽象名詞和物質名詞如果具體化，表示一個具體情況或動作或某一類物質時，前面可用不定冠詞。如：
It is a great joy to live in New China.生活在新中國真幸福。
Liu Hulan has an ardent love for the people and a deep hatred for the enemy.劉胡蘭熱愛人民，痛恨敵人。
Mao-tai is a famous Chinese liquor.茅台是一種中國的名酒。
