I．情態動詞can可以用來： 1．表示“能夠”： Two eyes can see more than one． 兩隻眼睛比一隻眼睛看得清楚。(諺) Can you say this in English? 你能用英文表達這個意思嗎? I’m sorry I can’t help you． 戲不起我沒有能力幫助你。
2．表示“可能”，“可以”： You can sit here． 你可以坐這裡。 We can come over to fetch you． 我們可以過來接你。 Can I come in? 我可以進來嗎?
3．（用在疑問及否定句中)表示驚異不可能等(後面有時可跟完成及進行形式)： She can’t be serious． 她不可能是當真的。 How call you be so silly? 你怎麼這樣傻? Where can he have gone? 他能到哪裡去了呢? What can she be doing now? 她現在能在幹什麼呢?
II．情態動詞could可以用來表示： 1)能夠： Nobody conld answer that question． 沒人能回答那個問題。 It was so dark，we couldn’t see anything． 天那樣黑我們什麼也看不見。
2)可能，可以： He said he couldn’t come． 他說他不能來。 I said we could go by boat． 我說我們可以坐船去。
2．可以用來代替can，比較委婉地提出請求 用法等(a)或是表示驚異不相信等(b)： a．Could you do me a favor? 你能幫我一個忙嗎? We could send the parcel by air mail． 這包裹可以航空寄去。
b．How could he be so rude? 他怎麼這樣粗魯無禮? They couldn’t have left so soon． 他們不可能走得這麼早。
此外could還可用在條件句中，表示假想的情況： I would help you if I could． 我要是能夠是會幫助你的。 If you tried you could do the work． 如果你試試，你是可以做這工作的。
2．表示“可能”，“可以”： You can sit here． 你可以坐這裡。 We can come over to fetch you． 我們可以過來接你。 Can I come in? 我可以進來嗎?
