Section4是IELTS聽力考試中最難的一個部分。在我看來，這與Section4的常考話題和出題方式有著密切的關聯。
在這部分考試中，考生會聽到一長獨白，通常是由一名大學教授或是專家給出的一個講座，講座的內容比較廣泛，會涉及環境、文化健康等一系列比較專業的問題。在語言和句型的使用上，也會出現一些考生不太熟悉的文法，這些都在一定程度上會造成考生理解上的障礙。但是，雖然話題比較專業，所問的問題都不涉及專業知識，也不考察考生的專業詞彙。所以該部分的目的不是考驗你是否掌握某個專業知識，而是測試你的聽力理解能力以及對細節信息的把握。
NO.1 Section4的題型及應試技巧
縱觀至今的考題，Section4的大部分考題都是以填空題為主，有時為Summary填空，有時為填表題，所以對寫的要求很高。因此，考生要做的第一步準備就是提高單詞拼寫的速度和準確性。尤其要重視對以前考試中常考試景的場景詞彙的總結。多年的教學經驗以及研究結果告訴我們，場景詞彙反覆出現的比率很大。
大多數考生在完成這一部分的時候覺得時間很緊，因此我們建議考生在一拿到試卷的時候就注意聽力考試的時間利用。尤其在Section1做題之前，幾乎有2分鐘的時間審題，這段時間裡，學生除了可以把Section1的題目做詳細的審題外，建議把後三個Section的場景和題型也瀏覽一遍。
在Section3結束後到Section4做題之前，會有近1分鐘的時間可以預覽題目。首先要看的就是考題指示中的字數限制，一般是no more than three words，但是有時也會是no more than two words,甚至是only one word，一定要看清再作答，否則即使答案的內容正確，字數超標也不給分的。然後，要快速預覽試題，找出題目中的關鍵字，根據自己的語法知識確定答案的詞性，同時，根據常識判斷答案可能包含的大致內容。另外，如果碰到table題，可以依照順序原則，根據題號出現的順序來判斷試題是按照橫向還是縱向發展的，並且按照表格中已有的信息來判斷空格的格式和內容，如可以判斷數字、時間、金額和大小寫信息。想在半分鐘的時間內把試題都預測完，就一定要加快預覽的速度，這可以通過一些快速閱讀的練習來完成。
在聽音的過程中，考生要注意掌握試題的節奏，通過聽一些表示前後銜接的提示詞來把握原文的脈絡，這些提示詞包括：And, also, too, not onlybut alsothen, in addition, moreover, furthermore;however, but, while, whereas。另外在聽題目的過程中，要注意對聽到的詞和題干中的字做同義聯想，不要期望看到的和聽到的字是一樣的。在完成試題後，一定要檢查單詞的拼寫、時態和單複數。
NO.2 Section4的常見話題
一般來講，在該部分出現的話題範圍比較廣，有教育、文化、商業、環境、犯罪、健康、生物等各個方面的。
例如2005年的聽力考試，這一部分的話題集中在：文化、生物、環境以及健康四個話題。
又如在今年9月17日的考試中就考到了關於海洋生物的研究，雖然話題比較晦澀難懂，但是考點卻是比較簡單的。所讓考生填的單詞都不是專有名詞，而且有詞庫可以作為選擇。
再如，在2月26日的考試中，Section4關注了男性健康的問題，提到世界範圍內男性壽命比女性短，都分析了男性要延長壽命應該採取的措施，裡面考察了life expectancy,back pain等場景詞彙的理解，並考察了Antibiotics的拼寫。
此外，在8月20日的Section4中考的是健康方面的recreation therapy，雖然是醫療方面的話題，但是並沒有涉及專業的知識，要求學生理解的也是比較基本和常見的單詞如recreation therapy, community等。
綜上，考生針對這一部分的準備可以集中在以下幾點：常見場景及相應單詞的熟悉，通過對連接詞的把握來把握文章的節奏，並且熟悉題型以及技巧。
