一、意思上的區別
1. homework表示“家庭作業”“課外作業”，為不可數名詞。如：
Turn in your homework, please. 請把家庭作業交上來。
I do my homework in the evening. 我晚上做作業。
2. housework表示“家務活，也是不可數名詞。如：
I'll do the housework tomorrow morning 明天上午我來做家務。
Have you done all the housework? 你已經做完了所有的家務事了嗎?
一句話：homework 指學生的家庭作業，housework指家務活(如掃地、做飯、洗衣等)，兩者均為不可數名詞。(JDD)
二、homework用法上的注意
1. 其前通常有物主代詞或定冠詞，但若意義較泛，也可不帶限定詞：
He's behind in handing in homework. 他沒能按時交家庭作業。
Do Exercises 3 and 4 on page 51 for homework. 家庭作業做51頁的練習3和練習4。
Children this age should not spend more than one hour on homework. 這個年齡的孩子花在做作業上的時間最多不能超過1小時。
2. 若要表示家庭作業的“量”，其前可用 much, a lot of, a little, an hour's 等修飾：
He has a lot of homework (to do) tonight. 他今晚有許多家庭作業(要做)。
I always do an hour's homework after supper. 我晚飯後總要做1個小時的作業。
3. 表示布置作業，通常用動詞set：
Our maths teacher always sets a lot of homework. 我們的數學老師總是布置很多作業。
